  9. Power Rankings: Week 5 02 September 2015 EUROBASKET 2015 The final preparation games are out of the way and the teams are arriving in Berlin, Montpellier, Riga and Zagreb. Check out how they rank as they step off the plane. Disclaimer: These rankings in no way reflect any official ranking system. They are purely subjective and are intended to be viewed as such. 1 FRANCE With two powerful outings against Dirk Nowitzki-led Germany on the weekend, the second with Tony Parker and Nicolas Batum barely utilised, shows France are in the best form possible to defend their title and become the first team to win on home soil since Germany in '93. 2 SERBIA There were some tough calls for coach Djordjevic to make on his final roster, but when you have to leave out a FIBA Basketball World Cup silver medallist in Vladimir Stimac, it shows you have some serious depth. However, France pip them to top ranking, thanks to their slightly stronger finish to the preparation stage. 3 CROATIA Nine games, nine wins for this year's co-hosts during the preparation phase. What was even more impressive was the quality of the opposition whom these wins came against and the calm they showed at the clutch with two games decided by three points or less, and a third decided in overtime. 4 SPAIN Like the Croatians, the Spaniards also finished the warm-up period undefeated. However, one could argue that the calibre of teams they faced in this period was not quite as strong, seeing them overtaken by Croatia and dropping out of the top three for the first time. 5 SLOVENIA The hosts of the previous edition of EuroBasket suffered two losses in their final two warm-up games, but it should be noted they both came against Serbia who occupy second spot on this table. They can be particularly proud of pushing the FIBA Basketball World Cup silver medallists to overtime in their second encounter on Saturday evening. 6 ITALY Italy finally have the roster their fans have been yearning to see with all their big names on board. They capped their preparation phase with three wins over the weekend in a tournament they hosted in Trieste. 7 GREECE Showing no signs of peaking too early, Greece now appear to be hitting their straps at just the right time with wins over Netherlands, and more impressively Lithuania and Turkey. A return to the Olympics is becoming a stronger reality by the day for the Greeks. 8 LITHUANIA It is tough to know what to make of a Lithuanian squad who have arguably had the rockiest warm-up campaign of any of the top teams. Just how much coach Kazlauskas was experimenting versus how disjointed Lithuania may actually be will be revealed when they take on Ukraine in their Saturday opener. 9 LATVIA 2015 co-hosts Latvia had just one game in the past seven days, a convincing victory over The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Excitement is now at boiling point in the Latvian capital Riga and the Latvians will no doubt look to react positively from it. 10 GERMANY Two losses to France over the weekend - the first by 24 points, does not bode well for Germany. One shining light is the fact that Dirk Nowitzki is growing in importance with every minute he spends on the court. They should still be able to do enough to make it to Lille. 11 POLAND Following a one-point loss to Latvia on 23 August, the news on the court since has only been good for Poland who have all bought into coach Taylor's philosophy to win their final three warm-up games over Asian powerhouse Lebanon, Belgium and Iceland. 12 UKRAINE Having surged up the rankings just one week ago, the Ukrainians slip back down a notch this week after being convincingly defeated by Finland on Friday night. However, the team appears settled with Jerome Randle adjusting to the team nicely and a spot on the plane to Lille does not appear to be out of the question. 13 BELGIUM Belgium hold their spot in 13th this week, despite not finishing their preparation campaign with the same bravado they began it with. Nonetheless, one can assume coach Eddy Casteels will be OK with his team arriving in Riga with their feet firmly on the ground. 14 GEORGIA Georgia had a forgettable final weekend to preparations, losing to hosts Italy in a four-team tournament in Trieste, along with Russia. There was however the slight consolation of their win over Michigan State, which came in their final warm-up game on Sunday evening. 15 FINLAND Finland bounced back from their earlier loss to Ukraine on 23 August in the most commanding of fashion, running past them 88-68 in their second encounter on Friday evening. Just the boost the 'Susijengi' and their ever-faithful band of followers need ahead of their trip to Montpellier. 16 TURKEY A loss to Greece on Friday night before needing double-overtime to defeat Netherlands on Saturday continues to raise questions of Turkey's abilities to perform outside of their own borders. Certainly worrying signs heading into the toughest of Group Phase groups. 17 RUSSIA Following injury scares, Russia have named a settled-looking 12-man roster with no shortage of veteran know-how. They finished their preparations strongly, pushing Italy hard in their last hit out to take second-spot in a four-team tournament in Trieste behind the hosts. 18 ESTONIA After pushing Croatia hard last Wednesday, Estonia failed to apply the same methodology in their final two warm-up games, losing by sizeable margins to Israel and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They will be hoping for a strong showing from their fans in Riga to spur them on. 19 CZECH REPUBLIC The Czechs completed their preparations by taking on powerhouse Spain, so will likely not be too disappointed by finishing 13 points behind. However, just two wins from seven warm-up games does not read well for a team with Final Phase aspirations. 20 BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA Bosnia and Herzegovina will be ignoring their loss to medal contenders and co-hosts Croatia last Thursday and will instead be focusing on wins over Israel and Estonia a night either side of that loss. Despite missing some major players, Bosnia and Herzegovina can be quietly confident heading into the campaign. 21 NETHERLANDS Netherlands finished preparation with a double-overtime loss to last year's FIBA Basketball World Cup participants Turkey. Sure, it was a loss, but the fact they are able to push a European powerhouse to the limit just days out from the tournament beginning will give them a huge boost of confidence. 22 THE FORMER YUGOSLAV REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA You have to go back to 11 August to note the last time The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia recorded a victory. The loss of influential coach Aleksandar Dzikic was a massive blow to the nation's hopes and it appears they are yet to recover from this loss. 23 ISRAEL Like Czech Republic, Israel will be another team advising people not to read too much into preparation results. With just one win to show from seven warm-up games, it is difficult to see them making the journey from the south of France to the north of the country for the Final Phase. 24 ICELAND Iceland have shown plenty of heart through the warm-up period, even producing an upset or two along the way. However, being dumped in the 'group of death' in Berlin suggests Iceland need nothing short of a miracle to pick up a win next week.

  17. Power Rankings: Week 4 26.08.2015 EUROBASKET 2015 The moment of truth is approaching fast as there are only 10 days remaining to the opening tip of EuroBasket 2015 and all 24 contenders are now putting the final touches. Disclaimer: These rankings in no way reflect any official ranking system. They are purely subjective and are intended to be viewed as such. 1 SERBIA Serbia rode out of Israel with two convincing wins in as many friendlies despite playing without Bogdan Bogdanovic in both games. More importantly, they keep showing plurality on offence and a great balance between perimeter and inside scoring. 2 SPAIN Spain remain undefeated and enjoyed their two most comfortable wins during the past four days, at the expense of The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. They rely on solid defence, an excellent transition game and a vintage Pau Gasol but the question remains how Sergio Scariolo's team will perform once they step out of home for the first time this summer. 3 FRANCE France, who had got used to steam-roll opponents in friendlies at home, survived a tight battle with Belgium at the weekend through the skin of their teeth, but there is no cause for concern. Not when Tony Parker takes over and delivers a performance that shows he is reaching top shape just days prior to the EuroBasket. 4 CROATIA Oliver Lafayette is out, Dontaye Draper is in, but in any case you wouldn't know that Croatia were in the process of replacing an injured point guard by watching them dominate Lithuania in Kaunas and extend their superb winning streak in preparations to six games. 5 SLOVENIA Slovenia gain six positions this week and Finland, Ukraine, Italy can testify as to the reasons behind this surge. The Slovenian team looked so good and played such free-flowing basketball during the weekend's Adecco Cup that even the ever-demanding Jure Zdovc was left satisfied. 6 LITHUANIA Jonas Valanciunas left training camp for a few days and then came the loss to Croatia at home. It does not amount to a reason for the alarm bells to go off, but it is enough for Lithuania to drop two positions this week. 7 ITALY Having suffered only one defeat in preparations up until Saturday, the Italians lost two games within 24 hours. First they get stunned by Ukraine after leading by as many as 27 points, then they get out-muscled by Slovenia. There are mitigating circumstances though as they played without Danilo Gallinari and Andrea Cinciarini while Luigi Datome picked up a -fortunately light- injury. 8 GREECE Three games at home, three very convincing wins for the Greeks over Russia, Czech Republic and Bosnia and Herzegovina. They are up five spots this week because at times their defence gives the impression it could shut down any opponent, although offence still poses some questions. 9 GERMANY While Germany won the ERGO Supercup with wins over Latvia, Poland and, more importantly, their soon-to-be-rivals in Group B Turkey, they watched as Maik Zirbes picked up an injury and was forced to pull out of the EuroBasket, leaving them without a tough-as-nails back-up center. 10 LATVIA The Latvians rise six positions this week as they snapped their losing streak by defeating Turkey and Poland, albeit at the buzzer. They might not have been the most convincing wins but they were significant injections of morale so close to the EuroBasket opening tip. 11 UKRAINE No other team has surged as spectacularly as Ukraine this week, as after trailing Italy by 27 points they found the mental strength to fight their way back and taste victory again after a long time. They liked it so much that they also picked up a comeback win against Finland the very next day. 12 GEORGIA Georgia maintain their position this week although they looked eligible to go up a notch or two by Friday. They came back to knock down Belgium in a display of winning spirit, but that win was followed by a heavy loss to France which cannot be justified by the absence of Tornike Shengelia. 13 BELGIUM Belgium drop four spots as they lost two games in the past days, to Georgia and France. By pushing the reigning EuroBasket champions to the ropes though they have given more proof of their resilience and ability to fight for 40 minutes, just as they had shown against Spain and Greece earlier in the summer. 14 POLAND Poland rise one spot since last week despite picking up two losses in three games. One of the losses was to Germany in front of a German crowd in Hamburg, the other to Latvia at the buzzer, while their victory over Turkey was convincing and Marcin Gortat looks to be in top shape. 15 TURKEY Turkey are on a slippery slope as they picked up three more defeats over the weekend and their losing streak was extended to four games. They have received some good news though as the injury to Cedi Osman was not serious and he will return to action in a few days. 16 FINLAND Finland drop five spots following a rather disappointing weekend in Koper that gave them plenty of food for thought. The Finns could not keep up with either Italy or Slovenia while they appeared to be redeeming themselves against Ukraine but collapsed late and suffered another loss. 17 ESTONIA Estonia are on the up after winning the Tallinn 4 Nations Cup at the weekend on a perfect 3-0 record, which included victories over two other EuroBasket-bound teams, Iceland and the Netherlands. They have proved once again that, despite lacking a big man in the middle, they can produce the goods. 18 RUSSIA Russia experience a surge this week as they were dominant against Bosnia and Herzegovina and then showed character against the Czech Republic to snatch the win at the buzzer on a Sergey Monya three-pointer. Their zone defence against Greece also looked solid, albeit they ended up losing that game. 19 CZECH REPUBLIC The Czechs started the weekend with a loss to Greece and a last-gasp defeat to Russia but finished on a high note with a win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tomas Satoransky is in great form while Blake Schilb, who acquired Czech nationality through marriage, has been cleared to play at the EuroBasket. 20 ISRAEL Israel drop one position this week following back-to-back defeats to Serbia. While losing to the FIBA World Cup silver medallists certainly does not constitute a debacle, Israel were playing at home and yet were never really in the game, on either of the two nights. 21 ICELAND Iceland are no longer bottom of the rankings and rise three spots since last week following their victory over the Netherlands at the weekend despite playing without one of their best players, Haukur Palsson. They lost to Estonia but finished on a high note after defeating the Philippines. 22 THE FORMER YUGOSLAV REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA Any team can lose to Spain, especially on the road, but the concern for The Former Yugoslav Republic Of Macedonia is that after losing the first game by 31 points, they showed no sign of improvement or resilience in the second clash four days later, where the point differential rose to 34. 23 BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA Two heavy losses at the hands of Russia and Greece, the latter by a 39-point margin, took Bosnia and Herzegovina several steps back and gave birth to questions marks about their perimeter game. They were a bit better against the Czechs but still sustained another defeat. 24 NETHERLANDS The Dutch drop to the bottom spot this week as they lost to both Iceland and Estonia and showed little improvement on the offensive end. Their defence is their big weapon but they will continue to struggle in high-scoring games.
